There is a silent epidemic that is affecting the men and women returning from war, especially in those returning from multiple tours of duty. You see it on the news, hear it on the radio and perhaps have even witnessed it in a friend or neighbor without realizing it. It comes in the form of nightmares, outbursts of anger or irritability, panic attacks, numbness or detachment from loved ones, deep depression and can actually cause physical problems like skin rashes, stomach or intestinal issues, chronic fatigue, headaches and weight loss or gain to name a few. For some it is debilitating as they return to their civilian life, while others are able to contain it within their family.
These individuals are reliving the traumatic events that they witnessed in combat, whether it be losing a limb or watching their fellow comrades die beside them. War changes you and combat or post traumatic stress is an inevitable result. This battle against combat-related stress has already taken lives as it continues to grow.
Heal Our Warriors Foundation (HOW), a non-profit, is dedicated to integrating, healing and supporting the individuals experiencing combat-related stress. These men and women are warriors who committed themselves to protect and serve. Let us now, in turn, honor and support them as they transition from life on the battlefield to life as a civilian.
